A trip through Alsace feels like stepping straight into a storybook, with enchanted villages, unique architecture and a cuisine that wins over every palate.

This route follows the northern coastline of Sicily, tracing just under 250 kilometres between Messina and Palermo along the Tyrrhenian Sea. Suspended between sea and mountains, it reveals some of the island’s most captivating towns and landscapes.

Day One: fairytale villages

Obernai

Your journey begins in Obernai, one of the most picturesque towns in Alsace — a medieval gem that blends history, culture and centuries-old traditions. Nestled at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile, Obernai is a place where the past intertwines beautifully with the energy of contemporary life. The town is wrapped in remarkably well-preserved medieval walls and boasts a historic centre that looks like it was painted on canvas. Its beating heart is Place du Marché, a colourful open square dominated by the distinctive Sainte-Odile Fountain, dedicated to the patron saint of Alsace. Around it stand historic landmarks such as the Hôtel de Ville and the Kapellturm tower, an elegant mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles. A walk through the cobblestone alleys reveals brightly coloured half-timbered houses, artisan boutiques and cosy bistros perfect for a tasty break. Don’t miss the Collegiate Church of Saints Peter and Paul, one of the region’s most important Gothic churches, recognisable by its twin towers. Obernai is also a paradise for food lovers: try traditional dishes like tarte flambée or indulge in a slice of kougelhopf, the iconic Alsatian ring-shaped cake. This village is the perfect introduction to the region’s culture and charm.

Eguisheim

Continuing south, you’ll reach Eguisheim — ranked among the “Most Beautiful Villages in France” thanks to its charming streets, flower-adorned houses and postcard-worthy atmosphere. The village’s heart is Place du Château Saint-Léon, framed by a scenic fountain and a chapel dedicated to Saint Leo IX, a pope born right here. As you stroll around, it’s hard not to be enchanted by the artisan workshops, the vineyards surrounding the village and the peaceful vibe flowing through every corner. On the way to your next stop, while your car recharges at one of the points suggested by the Plenitude On The Road app (great options include the chargers at 27 and 23 Rue Herzog in Wintzenheim), you can treat yourself to a well-deserved coffee break.

Riquewihr

Your first day ends in Riquewihr, a village whose charm feels timeless. With its cobblestone lanes and half-timbered houses, Riquewihr looks as though it was lifted straight from a fairytale — so much so that it is said to have inspired the village in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Highlights include the Dolder Tower and the ancient wine cellars tucked throughout the village.

Day Two: Colmar and Kaysersberg

Colmar

Your second day begins in Colmar, considered the symbol of authentic Alsace and often described as a “little Venice.” The historic centre is crossed by picturesque canals — the reason behind its nickname — and filled with colourful half-timbered houses. The Petite Venise district is the city’s most iconic area, a must-see for its water views and postcard-perfect charm. As you wander through the cobbled streets, you’ll come across sights like Maison Pfister, a Renaissance house decorated with frescoes and carved wood, and the Collegiate Church of Saint Martin, a beautiful example of Alsatian Gothic architecture. Art lovers shouldn’t miss the Unterlinden Museum, home to the famous Isenheim Altarpiece, a masterpiece of the German Renaissance. Before leaving Colmar, recharge your car at the Enilive Station located at 42 Route d’Ingersheim.

Kaysersberg

In the afternoon, continue on to Kaysersberg, another gem listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages in France.” Its perfectly preserved historic centre and fairytale atmosphere captivate visitors year-round. Colourful half-timbered houses line the cobblestone streets, decorated with flower-filled balconies in spring and summer. During the Christmas season, the whole village — like all of Alsace — glows with magical lights and festive markets. One of Kaysersberg’s symbols is the fortified 15th-century bridge crossing the Weiss River, offering a picturesque view of the village. Don’t miss the climb to the ruins of the Imperial Castle perched above the town. Besides a journey into medieval history, the castle rewards you with sweeping views over the vineyards and rolling Alsatian hills.

Day Three: Strasbourg, the heart of Alsace

Your final day is dedicated to Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace and home to the European Parliament. Guided by the Plenitude On The Road app, you can recharge at the Enilive Station on 4 Route d’Altenheim.
The city’s historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a treasure trove crowned by the majestic Strasbourg Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece with a soaring 142-metre spire. Inside, the famous astronomical clock comes to life every day at 12:30 with its mechanical spectacle. From here, continue to Petite France, Strasbourg’s most romantic neighbourhood, where canals reflect rows of half-timbered houses once inhabited by fishermen and tanners. For those who love scenic walks, the covered bridges and the Vauban Dam offer unforgettable panoramic views.
Art enthusiasts can’t miss the Palais Rohan, home to three museums dedicated to decorative arts, fine arts and archaeology. If you prefer contemporary architecture, head to the European Quarter to see the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights — symbols of Strasbourg’s central role in European democracy. To end your visit on a relaxing note, enjoy a boat cruise along the canals — even more magical at sunset — for a unique perspective of the historic centre. Before heading back, you can recharge again at the Enilive Station in Bischheim, at 79 Route de Bischwiller.

Strasbourg

Each season brings a different mood to Alsace: spring and autumn enchant with the colours of vineyards and hills, while winter is when the region reaches peak magic — especially during Christmas time. From late November, villages light up with shimmering decorations, scents of spices and festive melodies. The Alsace Christmas markets — among the oldest and most atmospheric in Europe — transform places like Colmar, Riquewihr and Kaysersberg into living fairytales. With wooden chalets, handcrafted ornaments and cosy lights everywhere, it’s impossible not to be swept away by the warm, enchanting spirit that makes this journey truly unforgettable.
